We have added a (hopefully) helpful addition to the website – automatic translations using Google Translate. Automatic translation isn’t as good as a human translation of course, but this should still make the site easier to use and understand for our international users.

It will automatically select the language your browser is set to, but if you want to change it just choose a different one from the language picker.

Note that the picker scrolls – scroll down if you need Russian or Spanish.

There is a new version of OpenSceneryX out, v4.3.0, which includes 3D previews of objects, lines, polygons and forests which are now displayed on the website. You can also preview all seasonal variants where they exist:

Here are the full release notes:

  • New scenery objects in this version:
  • Modified scenery objects in this version:
    • The spring and winter (no snow) forests were showing with a white ‘halo’ around them, which has now been fixed.
    • Discovered that the build process wasn’t always copying both DDS and PNG textures if they were both available. As a result, many more objects now have DDS textures.
    • Corrected a number of the polygons which contained invalid commands.
  • Other changes:
    • Added support for season switching using the Scenery Animation Manager plugin (SAM).
    • When delivering winter seasonal variants, we now prioritise specific snow / non-snow variants over default winter variants. This ensures, for example, that you will always see a snowy variant if you are using a plugin that requests snowy assets (provided there is a snowy version available for that item, of course!).
    • Improved the documentation for the asphalt surface polygon variants which are designed to be used over the top of opaque asphalt to give a more weathered look.
    • 3D previews of objects, lines, polygons and forests are now displayed on the website.

Also, to accompany the new library version, there is a new installer too, which has the following changes:

  1. Added support for season switching using the Scenery Animation Manager plugin (SAM).
  2. New application icon.
  3. Improve button and drop-down menu layouts on Linux.
  4. The Spanish and Catalan translations have been updated, thank you to Haris Amiel.
  5. No longer use an internal web browser to show the license – open the default web browser (e.g. Edge, Safari, Chrome) instead.
  6. Memory leak fixed on Windows. May have been causing the installer to hang towards the end of large installs.

Grab the new installer from the website home page: www.opensceneryx.com.

I don’t think we’ve ever thanked Cloudflare for the fantastic service they provide.

So here’s a huge shout out to this fantastic service, which is making the Internet faster and safer for all.

Without these guys the OpenSceneryX project could never afford to host our X-Plane® Scenery library.

Thank you!

A new version of the library has been released today. This is a tiny release for the library with only one new object and one modified object. However, the big change this time is the website – it has been completely revamped and re-structured, with the whole thing being served by WordPress. The separate blog is no more, this has been integrated as ‘news’ into the new website. Hopefully this all makes the site easier to navigate and understand, and information is closer to hand.

Obviously with a major site rebuild like this, there are bound to be bugs and issues so please reply to this post if you spot anything a bit odd.

It’s been a long time coming, but there is finally a new release of OpenSceneryX out!

This release is mainly about adding new objects, lines and polygons, but it also includes the second phase of the X-Plane® 10 texture audit – this time removing all textures that contain any kind of night glow.  This should improve the look of scenery packages that use OpenSceneryX objects at night.

Other changes include some improvements to the developer documentation and a few tweaks and bug fixes.

Take a look at the release notes for the full list of new items and changes.

After an embarrassingly extended absence, the OpenSceneryX maintainer is ‘back in the building’ and he will try not to leave it again for quite such a long time in future!

I’ve caught up on all the submissions to the library, done a lot of housekeeping (including moving all the repositories to GitHub), as well as catching up on blog comments.  So, although I can’t promise an OpenSceneryX update every 5 minutes (did that ever happen?) I will try very hard to at least keep regular releases and not disappear for years.

Sorry 🙁

After quite a long delay since the last release (sorry!), OpenSceneryX 2.0.0 is out. There are loads of changes in this version, some highlights are:

  • X-Plane 10 Compatibility – all baked-in ground shadows have been removed as X-Plane 10 now provides a proper lighting model with dynamic shadows
  • A large number of new objects
  • For scenery developers – The developer pack now includes a PDF index of everything in the library, with screenshots. This should be a big help to quickly find the object you’re looking for.

For the full list of changes, check out the release notes.

There is no new installer for this version, so just re-run your existing installer, and don’t be surprised by the number of changes (especially deletions) in this release. However, if you want to try the newest beta installer, it’s available from the top of the support page here: Support. Unless any major bugs are found, this beta will become the next official release version shortly.

Have fun!

Hopefully this is the end of the hosting woes caused by HostPapa.
